In the Chinese province of Xinjiang, Tourfan. Oasis city on the ancient Silk Road, it is in an arid desert area. That does not prevent it from being one of the first cities in the country to produce grapes.
How is it possible then that there never rains?
Thanks to an ingenious irrigation system: the karez. Invented by the Uighur there are more than 2 000 years, a network of canals which collects water from the melting of snow in the Tianshan Mountains and the routes through the city and to the vineyards. Absolutely incredible!
