Carrefour Hypermarket is the largest retailer in Thailand, whole of
Asia and one of the biggest in the world.
Coming to Thailand as a Westerner for the first time, one might think that everything is different here. Thai people's diet is completely different from that of Western countries and basically life is completely different. But this apparently doesn't mean that things Western are not popular in Thailand. In fact, there are more and more foreign companies like
Carrefour becoming very successful in Thailand with the same concept they got big in Europe or the USA. One of the most influential must be the French hypermarket chain Carrefour. They are the kings of retailing in Thailand.
A few years back, when these types of stores appeared for the first time in Thailand, there were two big companies building the first huge stores. These two were Carrefour and Tesco Lotus. Today, a big
Carrefour can be found in every big area in
Bangkok and everywhere else in Thailand. It definitely beat Tesco Lotus in terms of popularity. Many people were a bit afraid that these super stores would destroy many of the smaller local shops.... and they were probably right. It did but not to an extend that it was thought. In the end, everybody is profiting as prices for many things in Carrefour are so cheap that people can save money on their daily lives.
In
Carrefour you get everything that you can think of. The electronic department has a wide range of products including TVs, DVD players, mobile phones, computers, accessories, washing machines, water heaters, microwaves and everything else that you can think of. Offerings include well known brands like Samsung or Sony but also lesser known brands.
Carrefour also offers furniture where you can find tables, cupboards, chairs and even beds. Whatever you are looking for, you will probably find it here. General clothing can be found at Carrefour that is mostly locally produced and of a god quality.
Many foreigners flock to Carrefour because of the food that is available there. As Carrefour is a French Retailer, they have much European food available there. This includes fresh bread and pastries, meats, fruits, sweets and most importantly of course a good selection of fine wines.
Also, contained in all Carrefour hypermarkets you will find many restaurants like MK Suki, KFC, Pizza Company and big food courts with a wide variety of local and foreign style food.
When coming to
Thailand and you are looking for a shop where you can get everything in one place (and not wanting to spend 2 hours in traffic driving from one shop to the next) then Carrefour is the right choice.
