The Malay were the first group to settle in Singapore. Although they were the original settlers, their influence diminished as other, later groups of immigrants entered Singapore. The Chinese and Indian have overtaken the Malay community in terms of influence and success.

During Colonial times, the British decided to bring the Malays into Singapore’s armed forces due to their loyalty and great respect for the British. Later, after Singapore gained independence, the PAP (People’s Action Party) obtained power and changed the nature of the armed forces, bringing in many Chinese in an attempt to stabilise opposing factions within the country.

Today, the Malay community suffers in comparison to its Chinese and Indian neighbours. They have a worse academic record; a higher instance of drug abuse and higher unemployment rates than any other group. There are many reasons for these problems such as their lack of proficiency in English and Chinese, which are the two languages, used most for business and politics.
