Singapore and the mainland of Malaysia Posted by Mr. Michael Comglas on 03 June 2006 |
The island of Singapore is situated off the southern point of the Malay Peninsula (in S.E Asia). A large causeway that covers the approximate 1km distance between Singapore and the mainland of Malaysia joins the two landmasses.
There are road, railway and water pipe links between the two.
The Republic of Singapore includes around 64 small islands such as Pulau Sakra and Pulau Pawai. In the whole, Singapore is a mainly flat country with low hills, the largest of this being Bukit Timbah, which reaches up just 163m (545ft) above sea level. A large part of the island, especially that in the Northeast, has been reclaimed from the original swampland that once stood there.
