Singapore, "The Lion City" Posted by Mr. Michael Comglas on 03 June 2006 |
Singapore, or "The Lion City as it is sometimes known, is geographically placed at the crossroads of Asia. This, combined with the colonial history of the country, has led to the mixing pot of different cultures and religions that exists there. It is a situation that has created a wonderful blend of Chinese, Indian and Malay cultures; supplemented by a noticeable Western influence.
And although there are noticeable differences between each ethnic group, all are all proud to call themselves Singaporean.
Singapore has long been burdened with a reputation for certain policies operated on its shiny new streets and tall, proud buildings. It is undoubtedly one of the cleanest cities in the World and there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking pride in this. But when fines are dished out for littering, spitting, smoking in air-conditioned areas and for not adequately flushing a toilet after usage; it is understandable that many tourists visiting the city have noted these slight excesses.
But a visitor to Singapore should not let an occasional fine or two get in the way of exploring a fascinating place with its’ own remarkable history and diverse inhabitants; not to mention the food!
