Prague city guide Posted by Mr.Jeremy Entwhistle on 15 December 2007 British Nationality |
Prague the capital of the Czech Republic is an incredible city. This UNESCO World Heritage spot has enjoyed great success and popularity since the end of communism and has been called the city of a thousand spires. Prague is an amazing city to walk around; you can admire the mix of architecture, visit one of the many museums, shop in any of hundreds of boutique shops or simply kick back and enjoy the scenery with a glass of beer. The recent century was very hard on Prague, as it was occupied by the Nazis, during the Second World War, then was put under communist rule by Russia, the country then split with the Czechs and Slovaks going their separate ways. But today the capital of the Czech Republic seems not the least bit daunted by its history and has made great strives since the early 1990’s to become one of the hottest tourism spots in Europe. Getting to Prague could not be easier with many low cost and standard carriers flying daily into the city, there are also road and rail routes. The sightseeing favorites are Prague Castle, Wenceslas Square, Saint Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square. It is also popular to take a river cruise through the heart of the city whilst enjoying a meal or some live music. Prague also has a lively bar and nightlife scene with multi-level clubs such as ‘Karlovy Lazne Dance Club’ offering a range of music to please every taste and large popular pubs offering a range of local and international drinks. Shopping in the city consists of international department stores, multi-level malls and fashionable whilst often expensive boutique shops offering luxury brands. There is a huge range of restaurants and cafes that offer a great spread of international fare as well as some local classics ranging from ‘La Perle de Prague Restaurant’ on the top floor of dancing house to the more modestly priced ‘U Ceskych Panu Restaurant’ offering Czech and international food in a pub setting. Beyond this there are theaters and sporting venues to match any international standards. During the winter in Prague it can get pretty cold so generally the best time to go is during the spring or summer, but even in the winter there is plenty to do and the Christmas markets are a lot of fun. Prague is more than just the city of a thousand spires, offering a range of interesting and fun activities and diversions it is perfect for the popular long weekend or longer holiday, and with a massive range of well priced accommodation you are sure to find what you want in Prague.
