Pattaya, originally known as Phattaya, meaning ‘wind blowing from the southwest to the northeast at the beginning of rainy season’ has interesting and historical origins dating back centuries. The then mighty ruler Phraya Tak (later known as King Taksin the Great) marched from the former capital, Ayutthaya to Chanthaburi prior to the fall of the Ayutthaya kingdom to its Burmese invaders in 1767.
