The
Eiffel Tower is the most visited monument in the world. Since its construction 1887, the Eiffel Tower was visited by more than 200 million people. The Eiffel Tower is also one of the tallest structures in the world with 324 meters if you include the antenna on top.
At the time the Eiffel Tower was built, it was the tallest building in the world until the year 1930 when the Chrysler building in New York was finished. 300 workers had put together the iron pieces that the tower is built of. Overall, more than 18000 iron pieces were used and also about 2.5 million rivets. The workers were met with difficulties as the Eiffel Tower basically does not have any floors, it is an open structure. This meant extra dangers for the workers but with the foresight of Gustav Eiffel, who took many safety pre-measures, only 1 man died during the construction.
The
Eiffel Tower was built between the years 1887 to 1889. Originally, the tower was constructed for the Exposition Universelle, a fair that celebrated the French Revolution. One of the features that was requested to all architects who entered the competition for this tower, was that it should be easy to demolish again. It was planned that this monument stay for 20 years after which it would be dismantled again. Of course, since the Eiffel Tower has proven to be a valuable asset, it was not demolished at all.
When the Eiffel Tower was built, there were a lot of people who disliked the design and the sheer size of it. Why would you want to have a building in Paris that you can see from everywhere? Today, the Eiffel Tower is considered a piece of art that fascinates people from all around the world.
There are 2 restaurants in the
Eiffel Tower that are located on the first floor and the second floor. The first restaurant is called Altitude 95 which stems from the fact that it is located at 95 meters height. On one side you can view the Trocadero and on the other side you look to the inside of the Eiffel Tower. Altitude 95 can accommodate 200 people in total.
The second restaurant is called Le Jules Verne and is located on the second floor, 125 meters above the ground. This prestigious restaurant provides French cuisine at its best while offering stunning panoramic views of Paris.
