There is plenty of Macau restaurants and good food to be had in the city. Like any other Chinese, Macau people do eat throughout the day. Some up to five times a day.

You should definitely try the territory's native cuisine, Macanese food - a fascinating blend of Portuguese and Asian elements.

The Portuguese elements include fresh bread, cheap imported wine and coffee, as well as an array of dishes ranging from caldo verde (vegetable soup) to bacalao (dried salted cod).

Macau restaurant's most interesting Portuguese colonial dish is probably African chicken, a concoction of Goan and east African influences, comprising chicken grilled with peppers and spices.

Straightforward Cantonese restaurants, often serving dim sum for breakfast and lunch, are also plentiful, though you'll find porto wine on the menus even here.

Alongside the local dumplings and noodles, Macau's numerous snack bars often offer fresh-milk products such as fruit milkshakes and milk puddings, unusual for China.

Don't rely on Macau restaurants here opening as late as in Hong Kong; you might not get a meal served much after 10pm. But of course this is fast changing, thanks to the new casinos.

Macau restaurant Costs, however, are nearly always lower, with bills even in smart venues usually not exceeding 150-250 ptca per head.

Golden Court, the flagship Chinese restaurant, serves a scrumptious menu of Cantonese dishes. Restaurant Paorola offers the best of Macanese food and Copa Steakhouse is a first-class Las Vegas style steak house. Several restaurants can be found at the Fishermans Wharf

Rua Central 11 (tel 586 272). Genuine and excellent Portuguese food in a Portuguese environment, though the waiters speak English. Centrally located, not far from Largo do Senado.

Bolo de Arroz
Travessa de São Domingos 11 (tel 339 089). Near the Largo do Senado, this is a great place for Portuguese pastries and some of the best coffee in town.

Clube Militar
Avenida de Praia Grande 795 (tel 714 009). Although this is a private club, the dining room is open to the public. A great way to see inside one of Macau's colonial buildings - which has been beautifully restored - although the food doesn't match the surroundings.

Fat Siu Lau

A very popular, traditional old restaurant in an area busy with cafés and restaurants. Pigeon is the speciality.
