Overshadowed by its glitzy neighbor Hong Kong, Macau is a different and not well-known part of Asia

Macau is a truly fascinating piece of Asia. Because of its Portuguese colonial past, it is the furthest East that Latin influence has reached, and as such, is quite different from the British-influenced areas around it.

Taking a walk down Macau's famous winding paved streets you will feel more like you're in the Mediterranean area of Europe. Indeed, the antique lamp posts and Portuguese-style houses in certain parts of it give it a unique flavor. A must-visit is also the traditional village of Coloane, just a short bus ride from central Macau and featuring some nice beaches and a sleepy atmosphere the likes of which you'd never expect to see right next to a large city. Be sure to also check out Guia Hill, from which you can get some stunning vistas of the city and the bridges that connect it to the outlying islands of Taipa and Coloane. Some fantastic Portuguese food is also on offer and diners will surely appreciate the cheap but great Vinho Verde (green wine) available.

Besides this, there is also the Chinese-influenced modern Macau, which is rapidly transforming into the Las Vegas of Asia. In the newly built areas of the city, huge casinos have sprung up, ready to take you on a rollercoaster ride of riches or ruin.

Whether your prefered enjoyment is browsing through antique shops, sampling fine food, gambling the night away or simply spending a peaceful evening watching the ocean, Macau will surely have something for you.
