The Pulau Payar Marine Park close to Langkawi Posted by Mr.Umbert Fischer on 11 November 2006 German Nationality |
The Pulau Payar Marine Park is an extremely popular tourist destination in Langkawi. The Pulau Payar Marine Park is on an area that is 2 nautical miles large and lies off 4 islands, namely Pulau Payar, Pulau Lembu, Pulau Kaca and Pulau Segantang. Fishing in the Pulau Payar Marine Park is strictly prohibited. There is nobody living on all of the 4 islands except for some officers who enforce the law there. As there are no accommodation choices available on the islands, most travelers will come to Pulau Payar on a day trip. From Penang for example you can reach the Marine Park in approximately one hour. From Langkawi its a bit less, around 45 minutes. If you want to book a trip, just go to the Kuah Ferry Terminal at "Langawi Coral" and get the ticket there. For around RM220 you will get a boat trip taking you to Pulau Payar, lunch on the boat and of course you will be able to use snorkeling equipment. Some of the boats have see-through floors so you can watch the reefs while sitting inside the boat. There are also several other places where you can book a trip to Pulau Payar Marine Park and you might get even cheaper deals than RM220. The Pulau Payar Marine Park has four beaches with golden sand, all of them adding up to around 200 meters of beach. As you can see, this is not too much. Around the 4 islands, there are coral reefs and ths is the place where you can go snorkeling or scuba diving. Visibility in the sea at Pulau Payar is excellent. Between 10 and 15 meters is normal so you can imagine how fantastic a scuba dive is in this area. Besides being open for having a picnic, the islands also offer a tracking trail (actually two different ones). This way you can explore the vegetation on these tropical islands. You should ask the person who is taking you though as you will not be automatically taken to these tracks. Hovering over the coral reefs you will experience a different world. Many colorful fish are living here and the reefs provide a habitat for a huge amount of sea life. Watching this is a fantastic attraction and you will understand why it is so important to keep these reefs protected. If you booked your trip with Langkawi Coral you also have access to their viewing platform. This is a big platform in the water measuring 49 x 15 meters. The bottom of the platform goes inside the water about 10 meters. Basically you can walk into something like a tunnel that is submerged into the sea. Experience the beauty of the coral reefs without even getting wet. The best spot for snorkeling or diving is called Coral Garden. The reef is especially colorful and stunning here so you shouldn’t่t miss this part of the Pulau Payar Marine Park.
