Victoria Harbour is one of the biggest and most busy sea ports of the world and in Hong Kong it separates the two Peninsulas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. In this special location, the Victoria Harbour is a big attraction in itself, offering stunning views and giving the city of Hong Kong a unique cityscape.
Victoria Harbour has gone through several reclamation works in the past 2 decades and every time the government suggests a new reclamation project, there will be protests against this. As one can see, Hong Kong citizens are proud of the harbour and will do everything to protect it.
The public opposition is not unfounded. Victoria HArbour is seen as the biggest natural asset of the region, so reducing its size more and more cannot be good.
The most famous and stunning feature of
Vistoria Harbour must be the absolutely fantastic backdrop of Hong Kong Island at night. When the sun sets and the lights turn on at all buildings then you can witness this beautiful spectacular. There are numerous places from where you can perfectly see across Voctoria Harbour onto the skyline of Hong Kong island. These include Victoria Tower on Victoria Peak or also right from the bustling promenade of Tsim Sha Tsui. Another chance is to view the harbour is to take one of the famous star ferries to go across the harbour.
The amount of ships handled in
Victorias Harbour is amazing. An average of more than 200000 ships visits the harbour each year including vessels for passengers as well as goods. The Kwai Chung Container Terminal is open 7/24 and handles more than 605 of all ships coming in.
Although Victoria Harbour used to be the biggest harbour measured in containers handled per year, it has been loosing grounds to Shenzen as well as Singapore who have both outpaced it in recent years. This is not to worry though as it is still one of the top harbours in the world.
Victoria Harbour cannot be crossed by any bridge but there are 3 different cross harbour tunnels that can beused. These are named the Cross Harbour Tunnel, Eastern Harbour Crossing and the Western harbour Crossing. Besides these, there are 3 different MRT subway lines that also have tunnels under the harbour, These lines are the Tsuen Wan Line, the Tseung Kwan O Line and the Tung Chung Line plus Airport Express.
