Many consider Tsim Sha Tsui to be the heart and soul of Hong Kong. Posted by Mr.Michael Comglas on 01 August 2006 American Nationality |
Tsim Sha Tsui is at the southern most tip of Kowloon. The name means sharp sandy point. Now it is best known for the terminal of the Star Ferry. In times gone by it was a barren sandy beach. Another name this area has gone by is Heung Po Tau. Heung means fragrant and Po Tau means wharf. This refers to the cargo from heaung fan miu (a large incense tree plantation) that passed though to be shipped out to other parts of Hong Kong. Ocean pier, situated here, is one of Asias largest and most important piers. Many consider Tsim Sha Tsui to be the heart and soul of Hong Kong. It is a major centre for tourists and shoppers with many Hotels, restaurants and shops. Shopping in this area offers the best of what Hong Kong has to offer. There is shopping for all tasts and budgets. From Ocean Terminal/Harbour City you can go up Peking Road with its endless collection of jewlers, bars and restaurants. A little further on is nathon Road. This area is known as the golden mile and will blast your senses with its sights, sounds and smells. Chungking Mansions is worth a visit with great, well priced Indian food. Nearby the pavements of Granville and Cameron Road have plenty of shopping opportunities, especially good for factory outlet clothing. For a little culture Tsim Sha Tsui is packed with cultural centres and museums. It is well served for accommodation as well with plenty of budget accomodation as well as hotels.
