The main Hong Kong typhoon season runs from June to September. Posted by Mr.Michael Comglas on 19 June 2006 American Nationality |
Every year Hong Kong is hit by, or its weather is seriously affected by typhoons. The main typhoon season runs from June to September, when the sea is at its hottest and can give these natural monsters their energy. The Royal Observatory of Hong Kong is responsible for issuing typhoon warnings and predicting the strength and path they will take. They have a warning system that runs from 1 to 10. A number 1 warning means that there is a possibility of a typhoon heading in the general direction of Hong Kong. A number 3 means that it is less than 1000 km away and heading in the general direction of Hong Kong. This may cause disruption to some ferry services. A number 8 signal means that the typhoon is hitting Hong Kong. During this time most public services will stop and businesses will close. All ferry services will cease and many bus, tram and MTR routes will stop . If there is a number 8 signal when you are visiting it is best to stay indoors. Signals of 9 or 10 means that Hong Kong is about to take a battering and a monster is on its way. Typhoons of this strength are unlikely and have not been seen for many years.
