In Hong Kong, people do not only celebrate Chinese New Year. In fact, this year, Hong Kong will have the biggest New Year's Eve 2006-2007 celebration in China or maybe in the world. People will gather at Central District, Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui harbourfront to watch the spectacular fireworks on the skyscrapers and enjoy the Coutdown Carnival, where tens of thousands of local people and tourists gather every year. The most popular places are Victoria Harbour, Times Square, Culture Center, Tamar Site and Ocean Terminal. The carnival runs until half past midnight on New Year's Day and will showcast programns such as physical theatre, music, dances and magic shows. Different venues will have different themes of the countdown. At the most popular spot on Times Square, there will be apples lit up one by one leading up to midnight. This event is known as "Times Square Apple Countdown". At Victoria Harbour and Culture Center, there will be spectacular fireworks display and performances, which would attract a large audience. This year, there will also be a Countdown Carnival at Sha Tin Park and Sha Tin Town Hall starting at 8:30 pm. The pre-countdwon show called, The Emperor's New Suit starts at 4 pm. There will be many stages, the Main Stage will have Latin music with waltz and a marching band, the Comic Stage will have children's theatre and clown show and the Synergy Stage will be playing Hip Hop and Jazz with Scottish pipes and drums moving in the crowd.

If not on New Year's Eve, then on New Year's Day or any other time of the year, Mongkok or Lan Kwai Fong meaning "The Lady's Market" is a must-go-to spot for tourists and locals. The L-shaped cobblestone lane is the center of nightlife and dining in Hong Kong. You can enjoy a light snack, while predrinking at any bars, dine at the finest international restaurants including Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and various European choices or enjoy partying at any nightclubs. Lan Kwai Fong has many nightlife entertainment spots with more than 20 bars, restaurants and clubs within a few blocks. Although, the restaurants are more for the uppermarket, this place has literally something for everyone. Those who are looking for a reasonably priced meal can dine along or nearby Wing Wah Lane. On New Year's Eve every year, thousands of people gather at Lan Kwai Fond to celebrate and party in this small area, which never sleeps.

With the huge New Year's Eve celebration in Hong Kong and thousands of tourists visiting, hotels are easily booked out so make your booking as early as possible. There are various Hong Kong Hotels ranging from budget hotels to luxurious ones. Hong Kong Hotels located on Causeway Bay and Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon are definitely the best places to stay. These areas have the most popular restaurants, main shopping, entertainments including nightlife and they are also business districts. Recommended hotels are Harbour Plaza Kowloon, Stanford Hillview Hotel, Royal Plaza Hong Kong Hotel and Royal Pacific Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui and Express by Holiday Inn Causeway Bay Hotel, Metropark Causeway Hotel and L Hotel Causeway Bay Harbour View. On New Year's Eve, tourists can get views of the fireworks from most of these places.
