Because Hong Kong is home for so many people from every corner of the earth, it has representatives from all the major religions. The main religion that serves most people is a combination of Buddhism, originating in India, Taoism and Confucianism, both from China. This creates a fusion with many superstitions and other unique feature such as ancestor worship. China has a great diversity of faiths. More than 100 million people follow there chosen religion. The main religions are Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, China's indigenous Taoism, along with Shamanism, Eastern Orthodox Christianity and the Maxi people's Dongba religion. The people from Hui, Uygur, Kazak, Kirgiz, Tatar, Ozbek, Tajik, Dongxiang, Salar, and Bonan follow Islam. In Tibet the people follow Mayanna Buddhism, and the Dai, Blang and Deang people follow Theravada Buddhism. Buddhism was first introduced to China from India in the 1st century AD. It really took hold after the 4th century AD. The Tibetan Buddhism, or Lamaism is found in Tibet and Inner Mongolia. China has no 13000 Buddhist temple and 200,000 monks or nuns. Islam reached China in the mid 7th century. This was during the Tang (from 618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. During this time Arab and Persian merchants travelling through Central Asia to North West china brought their Islamic faith with them. China now has more than 30,000 mosques. The height of the Islamic influence came during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368). Christianity arrived with the Europeans and spread during and after the Opium Wars of the 19th century. There are about 4 million Catholic believers in China, with over 4,600 churches and meeting places. Protestant Christians make up over 10 million people in China, with more than 18,000 clergy. Taoism gained in popularity during the second century. It originated from superstitious, supernatural beliefs and pursuits of immortality in ancient China. The most famous Taoist philosopher is lao Zi who is said to have formed the religion and was born in 604 BC. His great work of teaching was the Tao Te ching (the classic of the Way and its Power. He concreted the concept of the Tao (the way). For man to feel completeness he must be at one with the Tao (way). Through self development if one follows the Tao immortality can be achieved. China has 1500 Taoist temples and 25,000 monks and nuns.
