| Barbados stands apart from all other Caribbean islands as it has remained under British rule throughout its colonial time. This is what gives it the nickname of "Little England" sometimes. Although Barbados is an independent state since 1966 already you still see typical English influences everywhere. This includes the names of the towns for example with names such as Brighton or Hastings that are unmistakably English.
