Paradise Island Barbados is the Pearl of the Caribbean Islands

Posted by Mr.David Miller on 18 June 2007
German Nationality

Barbados stands apart from all other Caribbean islands as it has remained under British rule throughout its colonial time. This is what gives it the nickname of "Little England" sometimes. Although Barbados is an independent state since 1966 already you still see typical English influences everywhere. This includes the names of the towns for example with names such as Brighton or Hastings that are unmistakably English.
Barbados government has tried to get a way a bit from this image but some of the English traditions will probably never go away including that Polo is the main sport and "tea-time" is a common event for local people.

The Barbadians or Bajans are proud of their Afro-Caribbean heritage and this is reflected in the many festivals and the music on Barbados. Reggae and Calypso are popular island beats and there are numerous local artists that are popular not only on Barbados but internationally. Also, drums play an important part as drum music was prohibited during colonial rule as to make any organization for a rebellion impossible.
Barbadians are cheerful people and good dancers! Having fresh, fruity rum cocktails available at every corner only helps things to get fun. Rum is a main produce in Barbados and the island is famous for high quality rum drinks.

As you will surely know already, tourism is the main industry of Barbados and therefore many high quality hotels and resorts are located here. Barbados serves especially well to the upscale market with many luxurious accommodations available. That doesn't mean there is no quality budget accommodation available.
Barbados, with its white sand beaches, extremely beautiful scenic landscapes and crystal clear ocean is a paradise on earth and this is what makes it one of the most sought after travel destinations all over the world.

The West Coast of Barbados is normally considered to be the more expensive one but even there you can also find reasonably priced accommodation. If you move away from the beach, accommodations also start getting cheaper. With such am interesting and varied cuisine on the island, it is advisable not to go for all inclusive offerings. You will want to try out different restaurants and get a real taste of the fantastic local Caribbean cuisine.
