New interim Government within 2 weeks: No violence or danger reports Posted by Mr.Umbert Fischer on 21 September 2006 German Nationality |
General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, the head of the Administration Reform Council, has yesterday promised to set up a civilian government within two weeks of time. This is good news as any further delay in this would only hurt Thai democracy even more. The even more important thing though is the fact that the Thailand Coup ended without any bloodshed at all. Considering the bloody coup 15 years ago this is definitely good news. Tourists flocking through Bangkok are a good sign that it is safe to do so. There have still been no reports of any violence and it is very unlikely that this will happen. The Bangkok Post reported that the coup had only minimal effect on the torist arrival numbers. Most tourisn and travel business continued operations as usual. His Royal Highness, the King of Thailand has by now endorsed the Council of Democratic Reform and thus the process will continue informing a new government and constitution. The new interim government that will be built in the next 2 weeks will the take up to a maximum of 1 year to draft a new constitution. Using the 1997 constitution as a draft would speed things up significantly, a specialist from Thammasat University said. A new constitution could be finished within 6 months time. There has also been a lot of talk about the seizing of ex Prime Minster Thaksins assets. General Sonthi has called this rumors but after giving more power to General Khunying Jaruyan Maintaka for investigating government corruption people are not so sure anymore if these will really just stay rumors.
