The most important and famous landmark: The Royal Grand Palace. Posted by Mr.Michael Comglas on 24 July 2006 American Nationality |
The Royal Grand Palace – This is most important and famous landmark in the whole of the country. It is visited by a huge number of Thais and foreign visitors every year. Its majestic building and amazingly intricate statues and art-work are world famous. Situated within this temple is a building called Wat Phra Kaew, which houses Thailand’s most revered image of the Buddha. The Emerald Buddha is carved from a single block of jade and is incredibly beautiful. There are many different tours which are designed to give visitors an insight into Bangkok’s culture and history. On such a tour, you can see both old and new temples, visit some popular markets and enjoy a leisurely cruise along the river. Assumption Cathedral – This immense building was constructed in 1920 by the French community. Inside its walls you can witness amazing rococo architecture that serves as a complete opposite to the sights and sounds of a typical Buddhist Temple. Haroon Mosque – Situated between the customs house and Charoen Krung Road is a sizeable Muslim community, centered around the large Haroon Mosque. The building is beautifully decorated, again providing a completely different beauty to the Buddhist Temples and Christian Churches. [Source images from Kanistha Rattanapisit]
