Sathorn Another Bangkok’s Main Road. Posted by Ms.Ruethairath Aimsamang on 29 August 2006 Thai Nationality |
Sathorn (Sathon) is best known as the name of a road and is one of the 50 districts of Bangkok, Thailand with six other districts nearby which are Pathum Wan, Bang Rak, Khlong Toei, Bang Kho Laem, Klong San and Yan Nawa. The history of Sathorn is that it was once part of Yan Nawa district. However, it got separated due to its large area and population. Sathon Road is a main road in Bangkok consisting of Sathon Nuea Road and Sathorn Tai Road. There is the Taksin Bridge on the end of the Sathon Road commonly called as Sathon Bridge. The transportation in Sathorn area is quite convenient as it serves many kinds of transportation which includes buses, public vans, taxi and motorcycle. The BTS Skytrain route is not yet provided here as it is still under construction. However, it is expected to begin in the near future. The intersection between Sathon and Narathiwat Racha Nakarin roads is a new commercial area filled with office buildings. Although Sathon road is not a popular tourists destination compare with Sukhumvit or Silom, it has many interesting things to explore especially temples. The best known temple in Sathon belongs to Wat Yanaa. The temple has a unique junk shaped as pagoda which presents its descendants built by King Rama III. Another old temple is Wat Don, built during Rama I period by Burmese immigrated. One thing that pops up in local people’s mind when talking about Wat Don is a creepy graveyard behind the temple and the ghost as most of the area of Wat Don contains buried remains of Chinese heritage. Apart from having many stunning temples in the area, Sathorn also boats loads of luxurious hotels and many kinds of accommodation, pubs/clubs/bar, nice restaurants as this district is Thailand’s sober financial centre but Bangkok's primary party district by night when quarters like the infamous Patpong come alive.
