Jim Thompson House Is Rich Artistic And Cultural Heritage Posted by Miss.Pa-paavarin Thanakankun on 23 September 2006 Thai Nationality |
Jim Thompson House is home of James H.W. Thompson, a self-made American entrepreneur who was the founder of the world renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company. Thompson's achievements during his 25 years stay in the Kingdom of Thailand have won him much fame as the "Legendary American of Thailand".His famous Thai house, however, remains as a lasting remainder of his creative ability and his deep love of Thailand In 1976, the Thai coutappointed administrator for the property of Jim Thompson received permission from government ministries of the Kingdom of Thailand to legally establish the James H W Thompson Foundation. Jim Thompson gained further known through the construction of this house combining six teak buildings which represented the best of traditional Thai architecture. Most of the houses were at least two centuries old and were easily dismantled and brought to the present site, some from as far away as the old capital of Ayudhya. The houses were elevated a full story above the ground, a practical Thai precaution to avoid flooding during the rainy season, and the roof tiles were fired in Ayudhya employing a design common centuries ago but rarely used today. Today, Thai Silk is renowned for its high quality and unique style throughout the world, and the industry Jim Thompson revived employs more than twenty thousand people. In recent years much of the industry has become mechanized, and factories have taken over the bulk of production. But in the narrow back alleys of the Ban Krua community, the small cottage industry Thompson brought back to life still continues to thrive -- a testimony both to the skill of the Cham artisans who live there, and to an American of vision who believed in them. Located alongside Saen Saeb Canal on Soi Kasem San 2, opposite the national stadium off Rama I Road. Jim Thompson located in the center of Bangkok , it is conveniently reached by car, taxi, Tuk tuk, or BTS. Opening hours are 9.00 am and the last guided tour at 4.30 pm daily except Sundays. Photography is not allowed in the house. The admission fee is 100 baht and guides are available. Jim Thompson House 6 Soi Kasemsan 2, Rama 1 Road, Bangkok
