Thailand has gained an undue reputation for crime and danger, but visitors should not be at all put off by this. As long as you keep your wits about you, and do not do anything silly, your time in Thailand should be nothing but safety and enjoyment. Violent crimes directed at foreign nationals are extremely rare, even though it is given much press around the world. Many people feel much safer in Thailand than they would in most European or American countries and cities.

The majority of crimes against foreigners involve petty theft, credit card scams and confidence tricks involving fake goods or jewellery.

Saying all this, as long as you are careful and keep your wits about you, Thailand is a delightful and safe destination in which to travel. Take the basic precautions and you should be fine. If not, the Tourist Police often prove very helpful and, along with your travel insurance company, and theft or injury should be completely compensated for.
