Chinatown Bangkok Food Street: Food delicacies around Bangkok Chinatown and Yawaraj Area Posted by Mr.David Miller on 19 March 2007 German Nationality |
Chinatown in Bangkok and especially Yaowaraj area are a very interesting area for food. The "Chinatown Food Street" offers plenty of specialties and delicacies for food lovers. The best area to go eat is the Ratchawong Intersection where you have to turn into Ratchawong Road and then come back on Charoen Krung Road up to the Odeon Circle. This route will show you all that is on offer in Chinatown. Many stalls and street restaurants on the Chinatown Food Street are known city wide for their tasty food. Some of the best known restaurants and specialties in Yawaraj are: Shangarila Restaurant The Shangarila restaurant is a large establishment on the Chinatown Food Street that serves food quickly in air conditioned localities. You can order several, mainly stir fried single dishes that are all deliciosuly prepared and served by the uniformed staff. Thai Heng Just across the street from Shangarila restaurant is Thai Heng in a small soi that is a bit hard to find as the restaurant also has no signs outside identifying it. This restaurant makes food in Haianese style and its specialties are the excellent Kao Man Gai (Chicken rice) and the Sukiyaki. The Sukiyaki comes in a hot pot where you can dip in slices of meet to cook yourself. A bit more down the road you will find a street shop that makes Kao Tom Plaa (Rice soup with fish). Also, tofu and small fried pork pieces are added to improve the taste even more. Two different types of fish can be chosen from. The corner of Soi Kanmatuyaram holds another famous food shop that specializes on Chay Po Rice. This is rice with grilled, chopped duck, crispy pork, pork liver and chopped chicken legs. This used to be the main food of early Chinese immigrants coming to Thailand. Nai Mong Nai Mong restaurant is famous for one thing: Its fried shellfish, arguably the best in Bangkok. You can have oysters or mussels which are both prepared differently. Iew Kee This shop makes the best Noodles with pork and Kale gravy in Chinatown. Chinese pork is cooked together with Kale in a gravy sauce which is then poured over broad rice noodles. Soi Texas In the evening, about 18:00 in front of the soi called Soi Texas, several seafood restaurants open up and serve grilled seafood. Especially good are the crabs served here. It is a lot of fun to sit and eat here with the lively street life in this area. Old fashioned Khanom Jeeb Dumplings on Laeng Nam Road One last thing that is a special food of the Chinatown Food Street is the found on Laeng Nam Road. The food is called Khanom Jeeb (dumplings). These are seasoned minced pork wrapped in noodle and steamed. When finished dry garlic and a special soy sauce are added to give it a unique taste. There is enough food to test and try for a whole week at least but you will surely find some absolute delicious food on the Chinatown Food Street.
