Bangkok city is home to a diverse cultural and racial mix.

Bangkok became Thailand's capital in 1782 when King Rama I transformed this small village into the economic, religious, educational and cultural heartland of the country. Today Bangkok and its surrounding provinces have an estimated population of close to 10 million, making it the largest city in Thailand.

Bangkok is a shortened version of the capitals actual name, according to the Guinness Book of Records it officially has the longest name for a capital city. In full Bangkok¡¦s name is: Krungthepmahanakhon Amornrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharat Ratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit. The translation of this into English shows how enamored King Rama I was with his newly formed capital city, he describes it as: The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.

The tropical aspects of the city combined with the general congestion and smog means that the weather conditions in Bangkok are generally hot and humid. There are three main seasons in Thailand, the rainy season that lasts from June to October, the hot season that normally ranges from March to May and finally the ¡¥cool¡¦ season that is from November to February. Temperatures in Bangkok can range from 26„a C to 35„a C making the heat in the city at times unbearable. Visitors escape the intense heat of the city by traveling on the canals and rivers that criss-cross Bangkok¡¦s city centre.

Bangkok has changed beyond all recognition from the small village it once was. Today the city comprises of about 50 districts (Khets) that cover an area of 1,568 sq km. About a tenth of Thailand¡¦s population live and work in the capital.

This enchanting city is home to a diverse cultural and racial mix. Predominantly the population is comprised of native Thais, however immigration has meant that there are significant sections of Bangkok¡¦s community that are comprised of Chinese, Malays, Indians and Europeans. The myriad mix of so many cultures enhances Bangkok¡¦s welcoming and cosmopolitan air.

In such a thoroughly modern city Bangkok still manages to retain its rich Thai heritage in the preservation of its beautiful temples, shrines and numerous museums. Although there are clear ¡¥western¡¦ influences in Bangkok, the traditional Thai culture permeates the city. Reminders of Bangkok¡¦s entrancing heritage exists in the blend of historical sites and the continued presence of saffron-robed monks and the opportunity to witness traditional Thai dancers.

Amidst the incredible shopping opportunities that Bangkok offers there are some wonderful restaurants that enhance the city experience. Combined with a vibrant night-life that offers everything a visitor could desire, Bangkok has become an ideal holiday destination.
