Bangkok General Information Posted by Mr.Michael Comglas on 14 June 2006 American Nationality |
Bangkok, known by locals as Krung Thep (City of Angels), is the vibrant and exotic capital of Thailand. Resting on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is a fascinating meeting place between a historically rich Thai culture and a fast-paced city with a thoroughly modern heart. The original capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya, was abandoned in favor of Bangkok when the increasingly aggressive Burmese army destroyed the city. So a relatively small village on the banks of the Chao Phraya River was transformed into one of the most influential cities in Asia. Today Bangkok epitomizes the ideals of city living. There is a superb mix of restaurants catering for everyones taste and spending money. Equally there is a vibrant night life with plenty of things to choose from, anything from karaoke bars, massage parlors and clubs to Classical Dance Shows at the Chao Phraya Cultural Centre. The city centre is fantastic for indulging in shopping whether you want the hustle and bustle of the teeming, chaotic marketplaces, or a more modern western shopping mall experience Bangkok has everything you could desire.
