The
Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year is a term that is more often used in the USA) is especially celebrated in countries around Asia every year. The starting date is always on the second new moon of the New year. This means that the starting date is normally different every year. In 2007, the
Lunar New Year 2007 will commence on the 18th of February.
With the sound of thousands of exploding firecrackers, the famous Chinese flowing silk dragons dancing in the streets, unforgettable food creations that are artistically prepared and delicious at the same time, it is no wonder why the Chinese New year is such a big event for locals and travelers alike, young and old.
Feasting is just as much a big part of the
Lunar New Year as are traditional customs and the traditional lantern lighting.
The Chinese calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and uses a 12-year cycle system. Each year in this cycle represents one of 12 animals. These animals include rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig). 2007 will be the year of the pig.
Pigs are considered honest, tolerant, intellectual, dependable and affectionate. They are also impulsive, naive, and short tempered. The areas of work where they are mostly successful are law, entertainment and finance.
