Amsterdam Museums Overview Posted by Mr.David Miller on 30 April 2007 German Nationality |
Amsterdam is a city with many attractions. To give you a better idea, here are some suggestions for the many top class Amsterdam museums that are to be seen in Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum (under construction until 2008, Phillips Wing still open) The Rijksmuseum is the biggest and most visited museum on the Netherlands. Opened first in 1885 it has since then been extended numerous times. You can see mainly paintings inside but also some furniture from past times. The museum is currently under construction again which means only the Phillips Wing is open at the moment but all the most important works are in this wing now so you can still see a lot. Rembrandt's Nightwatch, probably the most important piece of art in the Rijksmuseum hangs here together with paintings from Vermeers and Van Hals. When entering the Rijksmuseum, the ticket price includes most but not all parts of the museum. The South Wing has another entrance where you have to pay separately. Located on Stadhouderskade 42, the Rijksmuseum costs 9 EUR admission. Van Gogh Museum The Van Gogh Museum is home to 200 paintings and 500 drawings by the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh but there are also some works on display by Tolouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. This museum is very interesting and should be visited by everybody at least slightly interested in art and history. Admission costs 9 EUR and the Van Gogh Museum is located on Potterstraat 7. Rembrandts House The Rembrandt House in Amsterdam is a 3-story house that was originally built in the 17th century. The famous painter Rembrandt used to stay at this house for more a bit less than 20 years. Next to the Rembrandt House, a more modern complex has been built that holds a collection of Rembrandt's works. Also, and this makes it different from others collections, you can see works of Rembrandt's students and teachers. The entrance is 7 EUR and the Rembrandt House is situated on Jodenbreestraat 4–6. Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art The Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art is the best collection of modern art in Amsterdam. This museum features Dutch as well as International art starting from the second half of the 19th century onwards. Some artists that are featured include prominent names such as Picasso, Lichtenstein, De Kooning, Chagall, or Monet. There is photography, video and industrial design. The Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art has a nice restaurant overlooking a garden with many sculptures that is especially nice during summer days. Torture-, Sex-, and Hash Museum These are a different kind of museum, hugely popular nevertheless. The Sex Museum was the first in the world and still is one of the most popular attractions in Amsterdam. It features prints, photos, paintings, etc. since the Roman era and you can learn about the history of this topic. The Hash Museum is good if you want ti find out a bit more about the hash or weed that is legally sold in Amsterdam's coffee shops. The Torture Museum is also not for everybody. The name explains everything. Popular nevertheless. Finally, the Amsterdam Dungeon is kind of a walk through place with live actors, historical figures, etc. If you are easy to scare, pass on this one. All of these museums are located quite close together in the center of Amsterdam so it is easily possible to visit several of them on the same day.
