Me and my friend came to Singapore for the first time this year at the beginning of April. We just came over from Malaysia where we stayed before for a week. We are not really into those guest house places that seem to be so popular in South East Asia and so we looked for a not so expensive place. We found the Gateway hotel with quite acceptable rates. The area didn’t concern me too much at this point as I knew that Singapore is quite an efficient city and has an extensive subway system throughout the city. The hotel is at least very close to the Geylang area of Singapore but I’m not sure if it lies directly in it. Anyway. Geylang is a main entertainment district of the city and when we were heading out one night it was only about 5 minutes by taxi. For the price paid you get a decent hotel room. Rooms we had were small but nicely decorated and comfortable. By the way: You can also ask for special “themed” rooms that apparently have just been finished. I did not know about them before arriving at the hotel but these are special suites that all come with a different theme. For example: There is a room designed after a French castle and another one styled after a Japanese room. Nice idea but probably more suitable for couples I would say. I liked that in the lobby there are several Internet stations installed which you can just use by inserting a 1 dollar coin which gives you 20 minutes of online time. Coming back to the area we stayed in. Luckily we were able to walk to a MRT station from the hotel which spared us the money to always take cabs into town. All in al, I would recommend this place when coming to Singapore. Sure. When money is not a concern you can stay in one of the many luxurious big name hotels but for us this was a good choice. |
